At five a.m., with a "click," the lamp comes on, and inside its pool of light the workshop wakes by itself — the cloth is drawn back, chrysanthemum-wedge grain folds into the clay, the clay on the wheel becomes a bowl, bowls drying in the shade dry out, and the kiln door opens. As the cooling glaze cracks with a "ting," the bowl sings. The evening lamp comes to rest on one crooked bowl a neighbor shaped — "Because it's the shape of your hands."
