From the Alley to Morning

Mother-of-pearl pictures inlaid in a black lacquer panel catch the light one by one, in the order of a single night — a stone-walled alley, shoes on the stepping stone, a wind chime and dripping rain at the eaves, lamplight spreading through paper windows, a warm ondol floor. In the morning, as the folding doors are lifted up, earthenware jars, a persimmon tree and the sun come into the frame.
