From the Gate to the Lantern
A hairline crack of light splits through the gap in the closed gate, laying a wedge of light across the stone paving of the alley. Looking down from above at the courtyard stepping stones, the shoes left on the stone step, the lattice-window sunlight on the maru floor, and a cooling teacup, the light grows longer and warmer from minute 0 to minute 60. At the end, a hanji lantern glows on the floor: “Tonight, I'm staying here.”
