A plywood wall packed with holds is stripped “clean” to the sound of drills, and the last pink hold to drop becomes the star. It gets a squeaky-clean bath, finds its place according to the recipe, and is bolted on tight, waiting for a hand — but what comes down is a climbing shoe: “Oh, it's a foot hold.” After the setter's test and even a move to a new spot, it gets blue tape and the new problem is complete, with three routes: “Everyone solves it differently.”
