Before the First Plop

Starting with a "Ding-dong!" and a look down at the delivery box at the door, it follows the setup one sound, one scene at a time: the tape's rrrip · "The whole chair fits in this little bag?" · the cord-linked poles going click-click-click · the frame snapping into place · the fabric whooshing open · the corners tucking in · and the last one, heave-ho, pop! With every sound, a tangerine-colored ripple spreads inside the card and a Gasoek onomatopoeia sticker pops on. At the moment of the plop, the music cuts out and a sunset wave washes over the forest-green stage, and the card becomes the sunset, stars, and chirping insects seen through my eyes from the chair.
