Why the Cuckoo Missed Four O'Clock
At 3 p.m., the cuckoo pops out of the shop's wall clock, sings three times, and instead of going back in, heads off on a break. It nudges the door bell with a jingle, rides a ribbon of butter scent, its wingbeats slow to slow motion in front of the display case, and at the window seat it takes one bite each of self-pouring tea and cake — while the clock chip at the top turns from 3:00 to 4:00. At exactly four, the clock door opens, but only an empty spring goes boing. With cream on its beak, finishing the last strawberry, the cuckoo calls out late: "Cuck… oo?"
